Abscess

What Is An Abscess?

An abscess is a reddened, raised lump or a swelling that can appear anywhere on the body.

It is generally painful when touched or pressure is applied.

Most abscesses are caused by infections.

They are filled with pus, bacteria and can contain foreign matter too.

In many cases they will not just disappear uneventfully, by themselves. Antibiotics often do not cure an abscess either.

Sometimes the lump will open on it’s own and the pus, bacteria, maybe blood and other debris will drain from it.

In other cases a doctor will need to perform a surgical procedure known as I & D (Incision and Drainage) for the condition to improve.
